Cedarbrook is an excellent example of how modular design and off site construction can deliver affordable housing, with a rapid pace of construction. The project is arranged in simple urban blocks, with a central public open space. Each urban block is formed from a terrace of repeating unit types, with distinctive corner types providing animation and variety. All unit types are own-door access, thereby avoiding the costly management charges that can arise from shared access core arrangements.
The project, the first of its kind in Ireland, was constructed using an innovative pre-cast concrete system: single leaf, pre-cast concrete panels with pre-formed openings for windows and doors were used for the external walls, which also provide structural support for the precast floor slabs and the precast stairs. A coloured, acrylic plaster was applied to the external face of the precast panels, and bathroom pods were imported from France.
