Preparation of this Local Area Plan involved the masterplanning and design guidance of a new urban extension in the Western Environs comprising 114 Ha of agricultural land within walking distance of the city centre.

The first of two major urban design projects completed by O’Mahony Pike for the medieval city of Kilkenny, the masterplan sets new standards for planned, sustainable development promoting the early provision of infrastructure; the phased delivery of 1250 homes; and, the creation of a new street based Village Centre with a local park, a school’s campus and local sports facilities.

The plan emphasises the creation of a self-sustaining urban community, intimately linked to the city through pedestrian and cycle routes and public and private transport, but capable of providing for most of the needs of the community locally. Accessibility is prioritised throughout, and a strong sense of place made by connecting a Main Street and a hierarchy of side streets, a Town Square and a Civic Park.
