This best practice guide illustrates how the planning guidelines can be implemented effectively and consistently across the different scales of urban development around the country.

O’Mahony Pike prepared the Urban Design Manual as a companion document to the 2009 planning policy on Sustainable Residential Development in Urban Areas.

The Urban Design Manual was the first time in Ireland that complementary guidance illustrating the implementation of planning policy was produced. From our experience in the creation of statutory plans and design guidance, and by delivering neighbourhoods within parameters set by those plans, we appreciate the importance of good design policy and guidance. Seeing the manual as an opportunity to push design upstream into national policy, the document is designed to act as a practical guide that prompts design responses through a series of 12 questions or criteria, rather than provide instruction.
